a question of opinion on the evolution of the armed services

hey i have a question that will affect my book whichever way i decide... so in your opinions: when humanity reaches the point where war in space is possible which branch of the military will be primary? army navy ect.. the issue im having is this the Navy. is defined as an organization of military vessels belonging to a country and available for sea warfare. so would the navy evolve into a space navy as is a popular idea (ie halo) and several other sci fi examples could be listed. or would the army or marines be more of the staple here?

History: The son of a rogue drow blade master, and a female human mage, Adrian grew up as an oddity in the land, for not only is he a half-elf but a half drow, inheriting his mothers height and hair and his fathers skin color, physical adeptness and grace. Adrian is graceful even for one of half-elven heritage. Adrian’s father trained him from a young age to be a master of the blade. His father captured by a drow raiding party when the found him defending the village. His mother was fatally injured in the raid and before she died she gave her son a great gift. She cast a spell granting him a drows long life making it so he can live to be upwards of 900 years old. After the funerals Adrian took what little he had left, his fathers Rapier and katar, his armor, a few of his mothers books, including one he wasn’t sure what it was… and set out to complete the task his mother set for him… revenge on the drow who took his father.

I think it would be the Navy. Because in space(I'm assuming artificial gravity), you would need people to press buttons, not break down doors.

Sci-fi: Name: Nefriit Huijari Age: 28 Gender: Male Race: Northern Humans Class: Mage Appearance: Nefriit has deep green eyes, which always appear to be staring into the middle distance. His hair is cut a centimetre from his scalp, and is mahogany in colour. He has thin eyebrows the same colour as his hair, which he uses to illustrate points in conversation. His skin is the same shade as coffee with cream, and is almost free of blemish. The exception to this rule is the burn scar that covers his left cheek, as well as part of the left side of his mouth. This gives him the constant appearance of a half-smile, which lends a sense of humour to all of his expressions. He wears the same pair of clothing every day, using magic to clean both it and himself. This outfit is composed of a jade-coloured shirt and moss green pants. The shirt is a perfect fit, so as to allow maximum dexterity. The pants are constructed in the same way, but they are tight at the ankles; whereas the shirt sleeves are not. His fingers are long and thin, providing an interesting juxtaposition to his larger than average palms. He wears sturdy shoes, which he repairs using magic whenever necessary. He wears socks, which many consider unusual. The socks match the colour of the shoes, that of sunburnt leather. The shirt, pants, shoes, socks, and underwear; are all made of soft and sturdy cloth, made from plant fibre. He has all of his teeth, and they are all white; and his nails are kept short but otherwise untouched. He has muscles, but nothing special, only what one would get over years of walking. He carries no weapons, but then again he doesn’t really need them. He has a backpack that he uses to carry assorted oddities and bric-a-brac, but since he uses magic to create food and water for himself and anyone who asks. Personality: Nefriit is cheerful whenever possible, the only exception being when he has to resort to . He believes that everyone has a spark of good within them, but that those few who do evil do so because they’ve become convinced their actions are justified. Occasionally, upon encountering any severe injustice; he stops it and then broods on his duties to the world. Nefriit never broods around others, as he doesn’t want to add to any sorrow they might be feeling. He is a very serious soul, and takes many injustices as personal sorrows. While this might not exactly be healthy, it is how he was raised and he stands by it. He values integrity and compassion highly and daily strives to attain greater heights of both. While he doesn’t force others to follow his morals, he won’t allow anything he considers immoral to occur. Rather than steal, he suggests asking permission. Rather than kill, he suggests binding their ability to do harm. Another large part of him is his sense of humour, which many find hard to understand. This doesn’t stop him from making obscure jokes that he’s picked up in his travels. One of his less than savoury qualities is his all-encompassing arrogance, and he’s been referred to as a know-it-all more than once. As such, he often makes people feel like he knows what’s best for them, and only really good ideas seem better than his own. History: Nefriit was born in the trade city of Kotimaa, to two parents and an older brother. His parents held the timeless beliefs in the powers of a name; and so assigned to him a twofold name: that of the arrogant, beautiful, breathtakingly powerful Nefriit; and that of the caring, persistent, and ugly Huijari. Knowledge of his name came at a young age, and he was proud of his first name. His second name provided only confusion and questions that clouded his young mind. Did his parents hope that he would be kind and caring, as well as beautiful and powerful? Or did they simply wish to give him food for thought? Regardless, in his mind he loved his parents fiercely and they returned the favour. His brother, older by barely a year, was given a name that was never explained to Nefriit. Vend Tryggur was that name, and Nefriit spent some of his younger years wondering what his brothers’ name meant. Three years after he was born his sister was born, and she and Nefriit got off to a rocky start. This was due to the fact that Nefriit attempted to sell her to a pair of passing Techie Elves; who almost bought her. Her name was Soră Bahagia, and her name was never explained to him either. After this rocky start his arrogance grew, as he believed that he was ultimate in the world. Everything he did took little effort for him, so he didn’t value anything, including his siblings. One thing he did put effort into was science, and he constantly did reckless experiments after the tradition of the Techie Elves. His father, Tėvas Terhormat; and his mother, Ibunu Szeretet; cautioned against such behavior. Like most children though, Nefriit would have to learn his lesson alone to stop experiments. At the tender age of 11, he gave himself a severe burn on the face. His sister had been dabbling in the magical arts of healing, and repaid his long years of mistreatment with the healing of his face. She prevented his , but her lack of any real training caused a permanent scar to form on his face. While he could have had it removed at any time by a trained Healer; he left it. His parents, though hesitant, stood by his decision. All of the other children felt comfortable showing their true feelings for him now that he wasn’t protected by his beauty; but he honestly didn’t care. He came to realize that he was cruel to his siblings, and decided to change that. His siblings forgave for his years of abuse rapidly, and he was ashamed (though no less arrogant). At 13 years old, his parents felt that they should show their children a place of peace and learning; and as they all had an interest in magic there was only one place to go. Burtai, the land of the centaurs and the Makara; where Soră, Vend, and Nefriit could learn their respective magical disciplines. The journey in one direction took a full year with favorable currents, so they traded all of their non-portable belongings away for long-lasting food and fresh water. His father won passage on the Jūra Viajante; a centaur ship; by challenging the ships’ captain; Lyderis Gnista; to a friendly match. While his father got thoroughly crushed, the centaur admired his pluck and agreed to let them come along for the ride. The centaurs valued children greatly, and allowed them to run amok on the ship; making sure to keep them away from the edges. Nefriit was enthralled, and passed a dreamlike sea voyage where his only complaint was the similarity of the food (the centaurs had no mages, as they considered magic cheating). Topping the wonder of that journey was arriving at their destination. The giant plains of Burtai were filled with the legendary walking trees of the Makara. He and his family were introduced into a community of the bird-like beings with their many wings and lack of arms and legs. His sister was put in a class for healers and was quickly accepted, as 90% of the Makara children also wished to become healers. His brother was accepted as well, but into the care-givers who kept the tree upon which the Makara lived healthy. Nefriit was an odd case, as the custom of the Makara was to have only one offensive magic-user at a time. They put him under the care of Rozloha Geleerd, and he took on the semi-legendary status of his new master. Under the tutelage of that most powerful of Mages, Nefriit came to understand that magic is the very essence of life. Rozloha also explained that the Makara were conduits to this magic, and as such had nigh-on limitless power. Nefriit worked harder than ever in an attempt to gain this power, and came frustrated to his mentor at the age of 19. His mentor explained that this connection could not be taught, that only Makara could withstand this level of power. Nefriit challenged that verdict, questioning why the Makara were not rulers of the world if that was so. His mentor took Nefriit on a journey through magic itself, showing him the history of the Makara as it had been passed down from generation to generation. The Makara had only ever gone to war twice before, and they were one of the most long-lived races in the world. Both times had ended in tragedy for the enemies of the Makara; and their empathy caused them equal pain. Nefriit was unsure this was correct, but continued to train under his mentor. Upon reaching 22, he and his family decided to head back to Xuitea, if only for a visit. One year later they came into sight of the continent and their first sight was a golden light in the distance. They thought it a good omen until they made it to shore and heard the tales there. Nefriit then departed, searching the land for some way to fight back the tide of Divinity. It is five years later, and he is no closer to finding what he seeks. It enhances his already consider able magical prowess, allowing him to slightly alter spells cast within a 15 foot radius of the staff (as long as the staff is within 10 feet of himself). Armor:Jade Cloak-Although all of his clothing is made with a more flexible version of the material his staff is made of, the cloak is the only one with additional powers. The cloak (made by himself)enhances his powers of deception, making it impossible to discover his tricks by all but the most powerful detection spells. I'll have to agree with Jade that the navy would be the ones most advanced. The army would still be big, but they would be on the ships to be ground troops, not flying the ships and commanding the missions.

Fantasy: Name: Sisilik Title: Sisilik the shadow. Gender: Male Race: Kapak draconian Height: 5ft. 7in. Weight: 153 Age: 27 Hair: n/a Facial hair: n/a Eyes: Dark red with black empty pupils. Build: Very slightly built, best suited to blend in with the darkness. Complexion: Dark red scales that get darker as they nears his head. Voice: Quiet and mysterious. Weapons: Two long dark bladed daggers forged of an unknown metal. It is unknown of he carries any other weapons, but if he losses his daggers he always seems to be able to pull another blade out of his cloak. A set of five perfect throwing daggers that don't even make a sound when cutting through the air that are hidden all over his body. He also carried a simple kit that includes a padded grappleing hook, a lockpicking set, and many vial of poison for food and drinks that disappears instantally with no trace of it left, not even smell.. Clothes/armor: He normally wears dark leather armor so he can still have freedom of movement, and over this he wears a dark black trench coat, complet with a hood, that he normally uses to cover up his armor. The strange thing about his appearence is a bandolier arond his chest and back that has many vials covering it. The vials glow with a soft green glow, and he never tells what they are filled with, but its pretty easy to think of what they are filled with. He often folds his wings close to his back so they look like a ragged cloak, just in case hes traveling in an area where draconians arn't welcome Alligment: None. Mercenary after leaving his homeland in search of more excitment. Magical spells: None. But worryingly he seems not to need any. DoB: Unknown, he never tells anyone. Personalitly: Secretive and sneaky, rarely talks to anyone unless its to tell his target goodbye. But when faced with more then two fully armed opponents, he would rather live and run, then chance dieing. Strenghts: An extreamily good assassian that has never failed a mission. He is also a very good fighter against one or two opponents. Useing his speed as his greatest advantage. His natural ability to produce one of the most lethal poisens in the land is also a great advantage. Even amoung other Kapaks his poisen is unaturally strong. With only a small flick of his tongue on his dagger blade can kill a fully grown man in a matter of seconds. Weakness: If he is caught he will somtimes panic, leading to rash decisions, which has almost got him kill several times. He is also a coward at heart and will run from his kill rather then fight the reincenforcements. Fears: Being cornered by a large group with no escape. Dislikes: Any who his employer dislikes. He dosn't really hate anyone. Backround: After being born he was quickly taught how to be a killer, and after many years he soon became one of the best. But Sisilik soon grew bored with the megar opponents he was facing, so one day, just after his 17 hatching day, in the dead of night, he ran from his home. He hasn't looked back since, and soon found profitable work applying his skills to the work of others, and hes loved every second of it. The thrill of the kill, the cloak of the night, and the screams of those who find the body.
Sci-fi: Name: Ollan Sira. Title: His only titles are those his bountys give him before he kills them. Gender: Male. Race: Human. Height: 6 ft. 2 inchs. Weight: 174. Age: 28. Hair: Dark brown. But it is often hidden by his helmet. Facail hair: Brown mustace and light brown stuble from one ear to the other. Eyes: Light blue. Build: Slightly muscular. Complexion: Slightly tanned skin. Voice: Arrogent and normally quiet loud, only in his presence of his employers dose he talk normally. Clothes: Light skin tight clothes over which he wears a full set of dark black Composite armor. The only other color is his right shoulder is covered by a red peice of composite armor. Only a chosen few know why it is red. But when he isn't bounty hunter he normally wears a black deasert jacket with red outline, black ribbed pants, and black hide boots. Alignment: Neutral, but normally takes jobs from the empire, they pay more. DoB: Even Ollan dosn't know the date. Personalitly: Arrogant and very sure of himself, but theres no denying that he is very good at his chosen profession, and will gladly prove it. Strenghts: He is a extreamly good shot, and is very good at fighting close up, with a weapon or his fists. But his major skill is his abiltly to imporvise, many times he has fought and won against armed opponets, armed with only a long stick, or a sharp peice of rock. Weakness: Normally quick to anger. Also he has only ever fought one Jedi, and it still remains the only bounty he failed, so his only weakness is that he cant use the force. Fears: Being caught off guard by a force above ten without his trusty carbine or being attacked by a Jedi/Sith Dislikes: Bounty hunters who dont take pride in their work, or hunters who cant back up their storys, and of course Jedi. Weapons: A Firestar-10K carbine taken from one of his first bountys. A hand made Stun batton that Ollan can change the power of, from light jolt, to lethal shock. While not bounty hunting he normally carries a DL-10 heavy repreating blaster pistol in plain sight. Backround: Born on Courasant and left on the street as a young boy he grew up as a begger. But living on the streets was dangerous, and Ollan took this as a challange, fist-fighting with all the other's. One day, when Olan was 15, a man saw him figthing a 20 year old, and was impressed by the young boys skill. The man took him in as his own, and Ollan soon found out he was a Imperial lutient, and taught Ollan everything he would need to survive. But one day he left Ollan to go on a attack and was killed. Ollan knew what he would want him to do, without sheding a tear for his dead mentor he gathered up his old armor and all the remaining credits and started bounty hunting. Since then he has continued this dangerous profession, becoming one of the best, with a 99.9%(Dam that Jedi!) success rateing.
Wild: Name: Faclan. Non know his last name. Title: Council ShadowWalker Gender: Male Race: None are quiet sure, but people beleive he is some rare reptilian race, due to his tail and hissing voice. Height: 6ft. 0in. Weight: 190 Age: Unknown Hair: None Facial Hair: None Eyes: His eyes just seem empty when he looks at you, only if you look really close can you see the slightly lighter shade of his pupils. Build: Thin to blend in with the darkness yet he had proven himself very strong. Complextion: (See avatar) Voice: Hissing and quiet Clothes: His clothes are quiet simple, skin tight black clothing over which is a long flowing black cloak which gives him the illusion of floating across the floor Other appearance: His tail extendes about four feet behing him and get smaller into a point at the very end. Weapons: Unknown the precise weapons he has, he seems to not need one most of the time, if he needs to kill anyone they normally just seem to drop dead with no signs of why. But if battle approaces he is normally seen with a very long curved sword of unknown orgion. This armor shines darkly in even the brightest light and covers his entire body, includeing his tail. The armor is beleived to be chain mail covered in very light plate armor. But it shows no signs of ever being damaged, even though the "Shadow sword." Has been in excistence ever since anyone can remember. Job/Class/Occupation: House of Shadow leader Type of magic: Though he uses magic it is unknown his full range of them. DoB: Unknown Personality: Very quiet and secluded. He rarely talks to anyone unless they are in his house or one of the allied house leaders. But he uses this to his advantage, because of this not many can get close to him besides those he trusts. This is one of the many reasons he has stayed alive for so long. But he truely only trusts The JadeTrickster, they have known each other a long time and have helped each other out more then once. Strengths: His ability to move completly silently even when running. That coupled with his skill in espionage, assassination, and being able to read peoples movements has kept him as the house of shadows leader for untold years. Weaknesses: No-one has ever found anything that can weaken him. Fears: No-one has ever found anything that he fears. Prejudices: None known Background: He has been the House of Shadow leader for a long as anyone can remember, even the historical information has always had him as the leader. Some even beleive he was the one who started the house. On this Fac says nothing. Fac has never spoken of his past to anyone, it seems that he has just always been in this world, and shows no signs of leaveing it any time soon.

Statement: I must disagree. Clarification: Your average naval vessel these days is very large, and coupled with the types of weapons being developed, are just great big targets. The more likely scenario would be that the majority of spacecraft would develop as small craft similar to the jet, but obviously of a different propulsion type.
Statement: The possiblities of vacuum warfare are one I will need to go into. Query: are you including laser and energy weaponry as a possible development, should fusion be successfully attained and applicable in these scenarios?

The family enemy of his guardian had tracked him down, and told him that Stronghammer was , and he was next. Munraev went into one of his few rages, the dozen Hoathcroft raiders. Then he flew to the Crown, asking that he be admitted to a service capable of maintaining justice. He is now an Operative of the SkaldJagern, a special branch of service for the Crown.
